About Characters of Character

Characters of Character was established in 2007, after earning a National Promising Practice Award in 2005, the creator and founder Joni Downey formed a 501(c)(3) organization. Since this time, Characters of Character has published over thirty books, brought all nine characters to life in costume, impacted thousands of children and families with their important messages teaching each of the traits.

Characters of Character has donated over 800 of their Superhero Activity Boxes to Children’s Hospitals since 2020 and continue to provide these donations through sponsorships, donations and fundraisers.

Relocated here in October of 2021 to plant roots and grow our organization here in Tennessee. Since we have been here we have made a few accomplishments: Joined the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Center for Nonprofit Management, NECAT, volunteered at the Chocolate Fest in Clarskville, taught character painting classes at the Burt Cobb Rec Center in Clarksville, written over a dozen articles for Pure Living Nashville Magazine presented a workshop at the Health & Wellness Fair in Nashville, donated our Confidence Building Activity boxes to the Hendersonville Public Library, donated our Superhero Activity Boxes to the Carell Monroe Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and also to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

What We Do

Characters of Character teaches our children and youth nine core values through character building activities, lessons, discussions, character visits and even art! Helping to build stronger communication skills, literacy, social and emotional awareness, building fine motor, creativity and helping each child bring out the best in who they are. Like our character Self-Esteem Elephant always says, "show me a thumbs up, point it to yourself and repeat after em" I LIKE ME!
