A Step Ahead of Middle Tennessee

A Step Ahead of Middle Tennessee is a nonprofit organization that prevents unplanned pregnancies by providing education and access to free, long-acting, reversible contraception (LARC). We believe that everyone deserves the ability to plan if and when to start or grow a family, regardless of income, insurance status, or background. We began providing services in middle Tennessee in 2016 and have provided services to over 6,900 clients. Along with providing access to free LARC methods at our partner clinics, we also provide free education resources. We provide free family planning education sessions that reviews topics such as healthy relationships, consent, abstinence, STI prevention, pregnancy prevention, and related available services.

A Step Ahead of Middle Tennessee prevents unplanned pregnancies by providing education and access to free, long-acting, reversible contraception (LARC). We partner with trusted medical clinics across our service area to provide no-cost long-term birth control options, including hormonal IUDs, the non-hormonal IUD, and the hormonal arm implant. Our services are available at no cost to students and residents within our 29-county service area who have a body capable of pregnancy, regardless of insurance coverage or income level. In addition to clinical access, we focus on education and community outreach to ensure individuals understand their options and can make informed reproductive health decisions to plan for their families and futures. Our Peer Educator program offers students a way to volunteer on or off campus with A Step Ahead to. A Step Ahead Peer Educators are trained campus ambassadors who share information about A Step Ahead’s services, connect peers with resources, and increase awareness of free long-term reversible birth control that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
