Pre-Season Baseball Field Maintenance in Shelby Park

Description

Come show some love to one of Shelby Park's most historic features: the Old Timer's baseball field complex! This portion of the park has been operating for over 100 years, meaning it could use some TLC ahead of the start of baseball season.

What will volunteers be doing at this event?

Volunteers will be helping to clean-up baseball fields of errant dirt, debris, and grass using landscaping tools. The tasks are very simple but labor-intensive, and all of the necessary tools will be provided by the staff at the baseball fields.

What is the community impact of this event?

This volunteer project will be supporting the Old Timer's Baseball organization, which hosts thousands of games with players from all over the world right here in Shelby Park! Supporting the upkeep of these historic fields means that these visitors and their fans will get to enjoy the facilities, while also alleviating strain upon the staff that currently cares for the fields. Recreation brings people of all ages and backgrounds together over a shared love of sporting, meaning your time and effort will go towards fostering this sense of community in Shelby Park.

What do volunteers need to bring or wear?

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, long socks, and long pants for their safety, as they will be working with landscaping tools. It is recommended to bring your own water bottle. All necessary tools for the project will be provided.

Accessibility:

This will be labor-intensive work, using tools to move grass and dirt off of an unpaved baseball field. There is a paved parking lot located directly next to the baseball complex, with a port-a-potty within walking distance of the parking lot.

What's next?

Once you sign up, you will receive an email the day before the event with more information on parking, weather, and the contact information of your point person for the day.
