What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will be helping Friends of Shelby staff create giveaway items for our annual and monthly supporters. We'll be using paint and rubber stamps to decorate wooden coasters, applying sealant to the wood, and potentially creating seed packets or writing postcards as well, if time allows. All materials will be provided by Friends of Shelby, as well as personal protective equipment.
What is the community impact of this event?
Friends of Shelby is supported by community members who make donations through our Membership program, and October is our annual Member Month where we give back to them as a way to say thank you! By giving them a piece of the park like coasters from recovered wood or flower seeds grown in the meadow, we create a sense of belonging and thankfulness, which in turn funds our work in preserving nature for all to enjoy.
Accessibility:
This activity will take place outdoors under the cover a picnic shelter. Volunteers are allowed to be seated during the project, and should have use of at least one hand for stamping, gripping, or packing seeds. There is a restroom located a short walk from the pavilion, or port-a-potties even closer. There is a parking lot within walking distance, though moving over uneven/unpaved ground is required to get to the pavilion.
What should volunteers bring or wear?
Volunteers should wear clothing that they're comfortable getting craft paint or spray sealant on, which could potentially stain clothing. So please be sure to wear something you don't mind getting permanently dirty! Besides that, please be sure to dress according to the weather. Bringing your own reusable water bottle is recommended but not required. Friends of Shelby will provide all of the craft materials, as well as additional water.
What’s next?
Once you sign up, you'll receive an email the week of the event with more information on parking, weather, etc. If you have any questions, please reach out to cd@friendsofshelby.org. Hope to see you out there!
