At this literacy event, volunteers will assist the students in the aftercare program with creating five "story stones". The volunteers will read stories to the students and then help students re-tell those stories. Then, students will craft 5 story stones using paper, glue, and markers.
Step 1: 3:40-4:00 Adults read to the children.
Step 2: 4:00-4:05 The materials person has brought the materials to their area. Students help to retell the story: Who are the characters? What happened in the 1st, next, and last?
Step 3: 4:05-4:25 Students choose 5 stones. They begin to cut out their images (if you want to precut to save time, that’s fine!). Adults will help students cut and glue the images to the stones. (a little glue goes a long way) With a sharpie they can write the names and 2025 on the back of the stone. Make sure to use the glue/water mixture on top of the images to ensure its weatherproofed.
Step 4: If there’s time, students can use the stones on the story mat to retell the story. If the stones are too wet, just put them on the windowsill to dry. Students can draw on the story mats instead.
Volunteers will park in the front parking lot. Wear comfortable clothes and the volunteers do not need to bring anything.
