Needs From: Belmont Office of Community-Engaged Learning and Service

Volunteer: Volunteer at Thriftsmart

Volunteering at ThriftSmart is a hands-on way to make a real impact in our community. Since we are open seven days a week, our great volunteer opportunities can fit most schedules. We welcome both individual volunteers and groups of up to 15 people.

Without volunteers we couldn’t do all the things we’ve been doing in our community. We could not keep expanding in ways we dream of to become even more involved with the residents of Nashville and the surrounding areas without volunteer help.  We get to meet and help new people every day who visit our store.

If you are interested in volunteering, use the GET STARTED HERE button below to see shift availabilities and sign-up (in addition to responding to this Need on Get Connected).

Volunteer: Lesson Volunteer

Volunteer at Saddle Up!

Saddle Up!’s mission is to provide children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational and recreational activities with horses. We bring that mission to life by providing a year-round program on our 34-acre farm near Franklin, TN.

Saddle Up! could not operate without the dedicated help of an army of volunteers from our community. There are numerous positions that require a wide variety of talents.  All volunteers MUST attend New Volunteer Training before participating in any of the below listed opportunities.

Sidewalkers

This volunteer interacts with and helps our special riders. Assigned to a particular rider in a riding lesson, this volunteer helps the rider get the horse ready, helps them get on the horse, and walks next to the rider throughout the mounted portion of the lesson providing support as needed. This is the person most involved with helping our special needs riders. Sidewalkers must be at least 16 years-old and able to walk briskly beside a horse for an average of 30 minutes. There are opportunities to sidewalk on a weekly basis or sub in as a sidewalker on any days when you are available.

Leaders* (weekly commitment for the duration of a program session)

This volunteer is in charge of a horse in a riding lesson. They pre-groom the horse before the lesson, help with tacking, and lead the horse throughout the lesson. Most riders who have leaders are unable to fully control their horse. After the lesson, they are responsible for putting the horse back where it needs to go and returning all equipment to the tack room. Leaders are volunteers over the age of 16 and must be able to walk at a fast pace for 30 minutes and jog intermittently during the lesson. They should be very comfortable with horses and react calmly if an incident arises.

Volunteer: Gift of Life Marrow Registry Campus Ambassador

Get Involved and Help Save Lives

The Gift of Life Campus Ambassador Program (CAP) enlists students like you for an internship to run cheek swab drives on your campus. By reaching out to your friends, clubs and campus organizations you’re involved with, you have the potential to invite many new donors to join the registry – any one of whom could save a life. It’s a pretty sweet gig. Hang out with your friends, make a difference in the world.

As an Ambassador, you will join an elite group of more than 300 leaders on college campuses across the country. Your journey as an ambassador will begin with a symposium in August where you will learn about Gift of Life Marrow Registry and how the actions your take by being a part of the program will save lives.

Once you are on campus, you’ll take your newly acquired knowledge and put it into practice, running donor recruitment events with the goal of educating new donors and offering them the opportunity to join the registry.

You will be encouraged to partner with other campus organizations, administration and events to increase your outreach. By getting involved with Gift of Life you’ll become a change maker and enhance your leadership, marketing, and communication skills. Nothing is more exciting than when you get that first email that a donor you swabbed has saved someone’s life!

Volunteer: Friendly Visitor at Trevecca Towers

GNRC is partnering with Trevecca Towers to pair Friendly Visitors with Residents at the Senior Living Highrise. Residents at Trevecca Towers are 62 years and up, some are younger if they have a disability. Many of the residents are quite isolated and would greatly benefit from a connection with a community volunteer.

Commitment: Spend time regularly with your assigned residents at least once a month. Visits can vary in length based on mutual comfort. Once you have been matched, visits can be coordinated directly between resident and volunteer.

You can spend time talking, playing games, reading, doing crafts or crossword puzzles depending on mutual interest. Many residents are also interested in help navigating their cell phone. So, if you are well versed and able to help spent some time explaining how to do things, that would be appreciated. Some clients need help with light household tasks.

Next steps: Please express interest in the opportunity and we will reach out to you with more details, to match you with a resident and to schedule an initial visit. After the initial visit you will be able to schedule your visits directly with the residents independently. If you'd like to visit more than one resident, we can arrange for that as well.

Volunteer: Virtual Opportunity: Help Nonprofits Connect with Volunteers!

Nonprofits in your community need your help - make an impact in minutes from the comfort of home!

Join Inspiring Service and play a vital role in strengthening the online presence of local nonprofits. As a volunteer, you'll review and make recommendations to enhance nonprofit profiles on volunteer platforms like this one!

This helps nonprofits reach more potential volunteers and expand their impact. With just a computer, some time, and your enthusiasm, you can make a real difference—whether from home, school, or even your favorite café.

Plus, we provide documentation for community service hours—ideal for students and professionals!

Why It Matters:

Your work helps nonprofits stand out, attract new volunteers, and achieve their goals more effectively. Even the smallest contributions can make a big difference in helping these organizations to thrive.

What You’ll Do:

Find Engaging Photos: Search for and select images that showcase the nonprofit’s work in a lively and relatable way.Update Descriptions: Review and revise profile details to ensure key information volunteers need (i.e. current website, location) is current, compelling, and highlights their mission.Categorize Organizations: Sort nonprofits by their primary causes (e.g., environment, education, health) to help volunteers find organizations that align with their passions.

These tasks involve a little online research and some creative thinking, making it perfect for volunteers who enjoy content creation and supporting impactful causes.

Hear from a student volunteer about their experience with Inspiring Service in the linked video below:

Whether you’re able to enhance one nonprofit profile or a hundred, every little bit counts!

Volunteer: Literacy and Math Tutors

The GiGi's Playhouse 1:1 Literacy Tutoring Programs uses a methodology with documented success based on research by professionals in the field. The ability to read opens doors for individuals with Down syndrome in the workplace, schools and the community.  Developing reading skills also leads to improvements in speech and language development, auditory perceptual skills and working memory function.  Our goal is to foster a love for reading and provide an opportunity to develop and master skills, all while building a positive relationship with our volunteer tutors.

The GiGi's Playhouse 1:1 Math Tutoring Program: Building math skills for individuals with Down syndrome increases independence in their school, in the community, and in the workplace.  The aim of this program is to help promote a positive experience of learning mathematics with a sound foundation of basic number understanding.

Our program is built based on the ways in which individuals with Down syndrome learn best.  Knowing that our participants vary greatly in their abilities and challenges in comprehensive math, we combine multiple approaches that utilize multi-sensory teaching. Graduated levels of purposeful progressions lead to an increase of skills and self-confidence. These methods are aligned with topics taught in the classroom, to provide a comprehensive and cohesive program.

Trained tutors work at the level of the child, continually challenging and encouraging him/her to reach their Best of All.  Students can start in our program as early as age 3 or any year after that. It's never too late to start!  Weekly lessons last 45-60 minutes for 10-15 weeks at a time.  Family members attend each tutoring session and leave with practical activities to continue the learning at home.
