The Embrace Special Needs Ministry is hosting a sensory-friendly afternoon for families impacted by disability. Connect with other families, explore community resources, and enjoy hayrides, farm animals, crafts, games, door prizes, and more! We have volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, and classrooms — a great way to serve together while supporting our community. Your time and energy will help make this day unforgettable!

Wisdom Wednesday presenters are community volunteers, partners that commit to one-hour (or 2 hours) of engaging programming around a career field and enriching activities. Volunteers representing programs/curriculums will prepare a 45-minute lesson and activity for students. Volunteers that are not facilitators of a program should plan for a Career Day-style presentation for students. 

Qualifications: Must be 18 or older 

Must be available at the agreed upon date and time 

Parking Information: Will be detailed in email after partners commit to Wisdom Wednesday. 

Appropriate Attire (if different from above): Casual attire 

Encouraged to wear t-shirt/clothing with logos of employer, agency, or university with which you are affiliated.

Please plan to arrive to Bellshire Elementary 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled start time. 

You can park in available parking spots 

Bring your id and check in at the main office. Someone will assist you in getting to the right classroom. 

Do’s &Don’ts 

Do - Tell your student about yourself- they love hearing about what adults were like in middle school! 

Do - Share how you arrived at your current career/position. What jobs/experiences did you have along the way that got you here? 

Do - Find a way to engage students. Is there a point in the presentation that students could reflect/brainstorm/respond? In-person speakers can do this throughout. Virtual presenters- ask the teacher to allow a few students to share their comments with you. 

Do - If there is a handout or document that you want the students to have while you speak, please arrive with 25 copies. Virtual speakers, make sure you send any printing requests 48 prior to your presentation. 

Don’t bring in outside food students. Small candies as rewards for engagement are permitted. 

Don’t arrange to meet any student outside of school or exchange phone numbers 

Do not be discouraged if your students are shy at first- this is a new initiative and students are acclimating to Wisdom Wednesday. 

Special Olympics is the world’s largest public health organization for individuals with intellectual disabilities, addressing critical health disparities through its Healthy Athletes program. The USA Games Training Camp, hosted by SOTN, is a mandatory weekend where Team TN athletes will meet for the first time. This final step to becoming an official team member includes team-building, meeting coaches, uniform fittings, physicals, practice sessions, and more.

Hosted by Bruin Vets, this event invites every student to take part in honoring the men and women who serve. Whether you're honoring a Belmont student veteran, someone you know who has served, or simply want to express gratitude, your message matters. 

Students attending this event can submit activity for WELL Core credit in the "Service Wellness - Serve Together" category (only if they have not yet received credit in the "Serve Together" category). Special Olympics Nashville is the proud charity benefiting from the 2025 Nashville Turkey Trot 10 Mile and 5K, and we need YOU to help make it an unforgettable day for our athletes! Special Olympics TN empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports, building confidence, inclusion, and community.

Event Support Volunteers will: 

Cheer on runners and hand out refreshments at water stations 

Keep everyone on course and spirits high as a course marshal 

Celebrate each finisher with high-fives and medals at the finish line

What to Know Before You Arrive: 

Let’s gobble, give back, and make this Turkey Trot one to remember!

Help us expand and improve the trail system at Mill Ridge Park! Volunteers will cover up to 3 miles while creating and improving primitive trails at Mill Ridge Park. Activities involve hiking, bending, lifting, and the use of hand tools, and include: planning, measuring, mapping, and marking primitive trails; picking up and removing litter and debris from the trails; trimming branches and removing invasive species with loppers; and moving downed trees and branches from trail to maintain proper corridor and prevent shortcutting. 

Volunteers for this activity should dress for weather conditions. Parts of the trail system could be muddy and/or wet. We recommend pants and shoes with adequate tread suitable for outdoor activity on rough, uneven terrain.

About VAPA - True to our Music City roots, the arts are a key focus in Metro Nashville Public Schools. The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department operates on the principle that the arts are vital to a well-rounded education and work to nurture the creative potential of all children and provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

Event Information – Celebration of Schools featuring the Metro Marching Classic

The Metro Marching Classic serves as a showcase event where all the marching bands from Nashville's Metro Schools district come together to perform. This creates a unique opportunity for students, families, and the community to see performances from multiple schools in one venue.

Volunteer Assignments - Volunteers will be stationed in multiple locations through the stadium to help our high school band members.

We will use volunteers to help students on and off the field, manage the instrument storage area, move students down the field for pictures or for the video cameras to capture them, hand off school banners, give parking directions, deliver food to the students, and help students know where the closest restrooms are.

Shifts - We will need a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 volunteers for each shift to successfully run this event.

Staying in town for Thanksgiving and December holidays? Why not invite a foster dog or cat into your home while their fosters are out of town?!?

Perks:

Pawster provides Crisis Foster Care for dogs and cats. When a dog owner is temporarily unable to care for their dog due to crisis, you foster their dog until the owner is back on their feet. Sign up to be a Pawster Foster, and you help a dog and their person. Invite a furry friend into your home today, and you will help keep a family together.

Pawster provides all training and supplies. You just bring your time, energy, and love. You decide how long you want to foster!

**NOTE: Belmont, Fisk and Trevecca Universities, do NOT allow pets in on-campus housing. This opportunity is only available to students who live off-campus and whose landlords allow pets. All students should verify with their landlords that pets are allowed before signing up to foster.

On November 1st, Pawster will support Safe Haven Family Shelter's annual event, "Hike for Safe Haven". This event is a chance to spread awareness about Pawster's mission and build community. This is a great way to do good while enjoy some festivities!  We need your help to staff the table and manage the dog area activities.

Volunteers will sign up for the following shift: Nov. 1st, 9am - 12pm

A great volunteer will: 

1. Shower love on all our friends at the Hike for Safe Haven

2. Enjoy the fun of the morning

3. Be comfortable around dogs

4. Talk to people who come to the Pawster table and tell them about Pawster's mission

We'll provide everything you need and make sure you are fully prepared to talk about Pawster's mission: Pawster's mission is support people in crisis by providing compassionate, temporary care for their pets. A crisis might be hospitalization, loss of housing, domestic violence, addiction treatment, natural disaster, or any other situation that leaves a pet owner temporarily unable to care for their pet. When a pet owner is in crisis, Pawster houses their dog or cat in a loving foster home until the owner is ready to be reunited.

The volunteer list is closed - Event is full. 

We have ongoing needs for volunteers to support our patients and their loved ones. Patients at home often need someone to sit with them, so that their caregiver can leave the home to run errands or attend appointments. Patients who live alone benefit from companionship visits and even a volunteer who may help tidy their home or cook for them. Patients who have pets may wish for a volunteer to spend time with their animals (dog walking or playing with pets). Musicians can play/sing for patients. Volunteers who enjoy arts and crafts can guide patients in creating.

Patients in nursing homes often don't have anyone to visit them or their loved ones worry because they aren't able to visit as often as they'd like. Volunteers who visit patients in facilities talk with or read to patients, help their patients participate in facility activities like Bingo or meal times.

Most patients who want a volunteer only need a once a week visit. The visits are typically between 2-4 hours, depending on volunteer availability. Depending on a patient's condition, a volunteer may only visit once or they may have a long-term relationship. 

Volunteering is typically flexible with the volunteers' availability.

We have two roles for volunteers at our Murfreesboro In-Patient Unit. This is an hour from Belmont campus.

The first role is at the front desk. A shift there is 3-4 hours, once a week or once every-other-week. It involves sitting at the desk and welcoming guests, showing them how to sign in, and if they need additional assistance, walking them to the room they're there to visit. Students are able to bring a laptop or books to study during this time.

The other role is for anywhere between 1-4 hours, depending on volunteer availability. It involves pushing our hospitality cart from room to room, offering snacks and other comfort items to patients and their guests. Some guests only want a treat and others want the volunteer to spend time with them, talking about their lives.

There is also the additional opportunity for a musical volunteer to visit patients and play/sing for them.

We need volunteers who can work the front desk of our administrative building on our Nashville campus. We currently have a 1-4 pm shift available Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This position calls for volunteers to buzz guests in and sometimes assisting departmental leaders with various admin tasks. Students are able to bring a laptop or books to study during shifts.

Thomas A. Edison Elementary is hosting its annual Gift of Reading event—an exciting celebration of literacy and imagination!

Volunteers are invited to bring a children’s book to read aloud to a kindergarten student and then “gift” the book to them as

a special keepsake. This event promotes a love of reading, encourages meaningful connections between students and

community members, and celebrates the joy of giving during the holiday season.

Hosted by the Thomas Edison Elementary Literacy Team, this Whoville-inspired event will fill the day with warmth, smiles,

and the magic of storytelling.

Once checked in, each volunteer will be matched with a kindergarten student to share a special reading experience.

After reading, volunteers are welcome to take a photo with their student to capture the moment before wrapping up

Join us for some seasonal fun at Whitsitt Elementary’s annual Fall Festival on Thursday, October 30, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM! This family-friendly event is a wonderful opportunity to connect with students, families, and the school community in a festive setting. Volunteers will help with activities such as greeting families, supervising games or stations, and keeping the event running smoothly.

Come join us at Glen Leven Farm for the 23rd Annual ReLeafing Day, co-hosted by The Land Trust for Tennessee. We will be planting a variety of 81 native trees in a recently cleared area that used to be completely overrun by invasive species. Tasks include unloading and planting trees, helping to transform this area to a place both humans and wildlife can enjoy!

Join us each week investing in the lives of Hispanic kids who need help with their homework due to language barriers and education gaps after uprooting their lives from their home countries to Nashville. Tutoring with K-5 is from 3-4:15pm, and 6-12 from 4:15 to 5:15pm. We are located at Rolling Hills apartments in the upstairs section of the leasing center!

Join us each Tuesday and Thursday from 3:40-5:00pm as we partner with the Hispanic Family Foundation to provide after school tutoring to refugee and immigrant children in East Nashville (no prior tutoring experience required)! For those that don't have homework, they need help with grammar and practicing conversational English!

Create an atmosphere of care, trust, and safety by intentionally building  healthy relationships with middle school participants.  

Learn about instructional strategies used with English Learners, especially  those with significant cultural barriers from first generation families.  

Lead activities, such as stations, lessons, games, and special events that   

Encourage skill development Support the NAZA after-school program  

Assist in development of lessons and activities that address student specific  barriers  

Perform research around SIFE specific instructional strategies  

Support volunteers and staff in working directly with students, teachers, and  school administrators to offer quality services aligned with local school and   

classroom goals  

Research and contact local partners to host special events and field trips for  the program  

Assist in gathering data on the impact and effectiveness of the program  

Requirements:

Purpose: The Adult Education program supports English language learners as they integrate into life in the US. Through programs like Citizenship Instruction, High School Equivalency, and English literacy courses, the department helps to shape the future for immigrants and refugees across Nashville. As an Adult Education Intern, you will gain valuable experience as you are trained to teach classes,  

implement curriculum, and contribute to administrative processes which support the overall program. In-person availability is required, though there will be opportunities for remote work.

Title of Position:  Refugee Benefits Intern 

Purpose: NICE’s Refugee Benefits program supports recently arrived refugees to effectively use and maintain benefits that they need to support their families. Specifically, we focus on Department of Human Services benefits like SNAP (also known as Food Stamps) and TANF (also known as Families 

First). As well as, public health benefits such as TennCare and WIC. 

Commitment: 

Minimum: 10 hours/week 

Maximum: 15 hours/week

Move For Hunger is hosting the 2025 Music City Drop, a unique event where participants rappel down the Omni Hotel in Downtown Nashville to raise awareness and funds for hunger relief and food waste reduction.

We are in need of volunteers on Thursdays in one of our ELL classes at The Branch (6:15-8:15) or at The Southeast Branch of Nashville Public Library (6:00pm-7:45pm). This need would ideally be served by someone who can make a weekly commitment. Meet and greet adults who are taking English classes at The Branch. Direct them to their classes and serve as conversation partners for workbook and conversation activities and assist teacher with reading, writing, and in-class activities.

Breakfast & Bible Study meets from 6:45-7:45am on Thursday mornings with our middle school students.

R.I.S.E mentors meet with an elementary student once a week M-Th between 3pm-5pm during afterschool programming. 

Lunch Buddies meet with an elementary or middle school student at their school during lunch time to eat with them. Lunch times occur between 10am-1pm M-F. 

You will help facilitate the distribution of free grocery donations in North Nashville at Cheatham Place Apartments.

The Nashville Dolphins are looking for dedicated volunteers to assist swimmers during lessons. No experience is necessary — just a willingness to learn and a heart for inclusion! Volunteers work one-on-one in the water under the guidance of certified adapted aquatics instructors, helping participants build confidence, learn swim skills, and stay safe.

Do you have 1 hour that you are willing to give to a student each week? If so, we would love for you to consider becoming a LUNCH BUDDY! 

Lunch Buddies are volunteers who go into a school to meet with a student once a week during the student's lunch period. The volunteer and student have some time together to build a relationship and do various activities together, including playing games, coloring and reading books together. 

This is a program where volunteers get to help students see and reach their full potential, because at PTM, we know that close positive relationships help students THRIVE! 

All participating schools are elementary or middle schools in Northwest Nashville.

Lunch times range from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Volunteers will need their own reliable transportation to get to each visit. 

The neighborhoods we serve are home to more single-mother-led households than 97% of neighborhoods in America. With single moms and their kids being our primary demographic of reach, we have a ministry just for moms, Dream Streets Moms Group. The women meet twice a month, enjoy a meal together, and also receive counseling services and other classes that provide growth opportunities emotionally, professionally, and financially. Childcare is also provided during this time so they can enjoy each other’s company knowing their kids are taken care of.

We need your help to provide childcare for these moms while they are meeting.

HopeWalk is our annual fundraising event that brings HopeKids families together for community, encouragement, and celebration. Leading up to the event, families participate in peer-to-peer fundraising, then gather for a symbolic walk that honors their shared strength and support. This is the one time each year that we ask HopeKids families to participate in fundraising, and all proceeds directly benefit our chapter, helping families continue to find hope and community through our programs.

About HopeKids: Our vision is to restore hope and transform the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions, and our mission is to provide ongoing events, activities, and a strong, supportive community for these families.

This year’s theme is “A Grand Ole Spook-Tacular Costume Crawl.” Families are encouraged to come in their favorite family-friendly costumes, and there will be plenty of candy and goodies along the way. We would love for you and your team to join in the fun by wearing family-friendly costumes!

Volunteers will assist at various stations, set up, tear down, cheering on walkers, and more!

Do you enjoy spending time in nature? What about serving public lands?  Join us for both at the same time! Miles upon miles of trails wind through Shelby Park and Bottoms, allowing park visitors to exercise and connect with nature. To maintain this invaluable shared asset, we will venture into the park to provide maintenance for the natural surface trails.
 
What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will be transporting and spreading mulch on the primitive trail to smooth areas that fill with water and/or get muddy when it rains. Using shovels and rakes, we will lay mulch over these areas to make them passable for trail users. We'll also occasionally clean off interpretive signs of any debris and trim back plants to make the trailheads more visible.

What is the community impact of this event?
By keeping trails dry and visible, we increase access to the outdoors to visitors who are unfamiliar with the layout of the park and bottoms. Clearing off debris, evening out the walking path, and cleaning off signs allows visitors to autonomously enjoy the park without feeling uncertain of where they are or unsafe on the terrain.
 
Accessibility:
This event will include walking with tools in hand over a mixture of paved and unpaved surfaces. We will be pushing wheelbarrows of mulch down the trail to unload and spread on the trail using hard rakes. Porta-potties are typically located near the starting location of the event.
 
What to bring?
Volunteers should be sure to wear long pants and close-toed shoes. I recommend bringing your own water bottle and hat/sunscreen, but Friends of Shelby will provide extra water and sunscreen, as well as all of the necessary tools and gloves.

Shelby Park and Bottoms is a natural oasis in the heart of the city. The forests here are a refuge for people and wildlife alike. Our Shelby forests need help: they are being overtaken by invasive plant species. Through our Restore the Forest program, we remove invasive species and replant native species to revitalize a healthy forest ecosystem.

What is the community impact of this event?
Healthy forests are beautiful for park visitors, provide food and shelter for wildlife and make our local ecosystem more resilient by promoting and enhancing growth of native plant species.

What will volunteers be doing at this event?
At this event, we will be uprooting and cutting down honeysuckle and privet plants with weed wrenches, loppers, and hand saws. They will work in small groups under the supervision of experienced staff and recurring volunteers that will help teach proper plant identification and safe tool usage.

Accessibility:
This event will include hiking while carrying heavy tools over uneven ground, and we will be working off-trail within the woods. Please dress according to the weather. Porta-potties are located a short walk from our worksite, and there should always be ample parking located nearby the worksite.

What to bring?
I recommend bringing your own water bottle and sunscreen. Water, gloves, all necessary tools, and additional water will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes that are good for gardening (e.g. hiking boots), long socks, and long pants to protect yourselves from sticks and thorns in the forest. If possible, long sleeved shirts can also be helpful for protection, but please dress according to the weather.

McMurray Middle School is hosting a Spooky STEAM night from 5:30-7:30pm at the school with lots of different activities. We will have a pumpkin carving contest, a mummy wrapping contest, a parent informational session, and more.

Celebrate Halloween weekend with the Cumberland River Compact at the spookiest cleanup of the Stones River that Donelson has ever seen! Volunteers will work mostly behind Kohl’s off Lebanon Pike and along the Stones River Greenway to collect common litter like bottles, packaging, plastic bags, and other waste. Your efforts will improve water quality in Nashville and beautify a public area. Bottles aren’t the only thing we’ll be recycling – wear your Halloween costume one last time for a thriller experience!

We are in need of volunteers to come help set up our Haunted Hallways and help take down. This event is done every year with an amazing turnout and we need as many hands as possible to help make this event a success.

Set up will begin promptly at 4:00pm and possibly early so it would be best to arrive at 3:30pm.
Students and families will arrive at 5:00pm and enjoy the festivities and food trucks.
Event will end at 7:00pm, take down may start 6:45pm depending how the flow.

Volunteer will use trash grabbers and reusable trash bags to collect litter from the grounds of Shelby Park and Bottoms. Most volunteers will be asked to stray off the cement path to locate litter under leaves, wrapped into fences, and around picnic shelters. Volunteers will be split into smaller groups after the check-in and orientation portion, and will return to the starting point for their trash to be weighed.

What is the community impact of this event?

The Cumberland River traces along the eastern edge of Shelby Park and Bottoms, and it is Nashville's #1 drinking water source. When weather washes litter down into the river, this can place extra strain on the water processing plants. By removing this trash from Shelby Park and Bottoms, volunteers will actively improve the water quality for all of Nashville and reduce strain on our processing plants. Also, putting trash where it belongs keeps it out of the mouths of local animals and protects our forests!

What should volunteers bring to this event?

Volunteers should wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing, as they might be moving up to 2 miles throughout the event. Bringing a reusable water bottle is always recommended but not required. Friends of Shelby will provide all of the necessary grabbers, bags, gloves, safety vests, and directions for those that need them.

Accessibility/safety:

This event will require volunteers to hold and squeeze trash grabbers to pick-up litter, as well as carry bags of trash that could weigh up to 40 pounds `each. Volunteers may always return to the starting location to drop off heavy trash. Volunteers will be walking along some roadways; they will be provided orange safety vests to make them more visible, but awareness of your surroundings is important to staying safe at this event.

Safe Haven Family Shelter is the premier shelter-to-housing program in Middle Tennessee that accommodates families experiencing homelessness. Safe Haven’s mission is to lead the community’s efforts to house, support, empower, and advocate for families experiencing homelessness. 

Safe Haven Family Shelter is gearing up for our annual Hike for Safe Haven, a Nashville favorite for its heavy dose of outdoor fun for friends and family, on Saturday, November 1 at Percy Warner Park (Bob Brown Field Station off of Highway 100). This pet- and stroller-friendly event includes hiking on a paved trail, food, live music, children’s activities and more! It takes over 150 volunteers to make this event a success. Become a Freedom Reigns volunteer for a day! You’ll get to meet the horses, enjoy fellowship, and help with some of our special Ranch projects. Children above the age of 5 are welcome. For children age 10 and under, we require a one-parent-per-one-child ratio. We also require a liability waiver for each Ranch visitor.

 The Team Member serves on a Belmont Table team. They offer practical support for the foster family by regularly providing services to the family at least once every four weeks as well as communicating with the Table Team Leader. Commitment Term Length: one to two school years (up to four semesters excluding summers).

All support services will be provided on Belmont's campus. Leveraging our shared location to streamline support and ensure longevity of volunteer Table Teams. At this time, support services will be limited to the following:

The Land Trust for Tennessee’s Nature Trail is one of many characteristics at our 64-acre Glen Leven Farm just south of downtown Nashville. From the forested canopy to open pasture to wetland creek bed and more, this 1.4-mile hiking trail is an opportunity for visitors to survey the types of landscapes The Land Trust for Tennessee works to conserve across the state.

Nature Trail Crew volunteers help maintain this educational and immersive trek on a bi-weekly basis. Our primary objectives for this group are trail maintenance and selective invasive species control.

Raise the Roof Academy is a nonprofit based in rural Uganda that believes in advocating for children and community one household at a time. This is primarily made possible by individuals who sponsor students of the school. We currently have just under 2000 students in RTRA.

The Down Syndrome Association of Middle TN (DSAMT) organizes The Extra Mile® to celebrate and support individuals with Down syndrome and their families and to promote understanding and acceptance of those with Down syndrome. Approximately 4,000 participants from Middle Tennessee are expected at this year’s walk, making it the largest Down syndrome awareness event in the state and our primary source of funding for our programs. The Extra Mile® will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025 on the property of the Wilson County Ag Center 175 Peyton Road, Lebanon, TN 37087.

Our biggest need for volunteers is at 6:30 a.m. but the time frames available are 6:30am to 10:30am, 9:00am to 1:00pm, and 11:30am to 3:30pm

This is a fun way to celebrate student success and keep them motivated! Students who earn enough credits during the week can shop at the Student Store during lunch. We need an extra hand to pass out the items they purchase, organize materials, and greet our students.

The Dove Store is part of Hull-Jackson’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) initiative, where students earn points for positive behavior and redeem them for fun items.

Alex Green Elementary is seeking volunteers to serve as Lunch Buddies throughout the school year. Volunteers can visit weekly, or as often as their schedule allows, to share a meal and meaningful time with a student.

Bring your own lunch, an approved snack or treat, a favorite book, or a fun activity to enjoy together. Lunch Buddies meet on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and students really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to the students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient and allows more of the volunteers' time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or marketing. Join VSVS (Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science) as they help Dodson Elementary School create a memorable STEM experience for their students. VSVS will be providing a number of their engaging STEM activities for VSVS and community volunteers to guide students through during this STEM Night.
