Needs From: Belmont Office of Community-Engaged Learning and Service

We are looking for businesses, community groups, civic organizations, clubs, fraternities, sororities, etc. to sponsor recreation activities for inpatient Veterans at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro. Examples of activities could include providing a pizza party, holding a bingo, sponsoring a movie night, etc. Organizations who have sponsored past activities have provided prizes for bingo (such as coupon books that can be used at our on site retail store) and refreshments. Groups sponsoring these activities would also volunteer during the activity. Some tasks could include assisting Veterans with their bingo cards, serving refreshments, pushing patients in wheelchairs to the event location, etc.

Examples of activities could include providing a pizza party, holding a bingo, sponsoring a movie night, etc. Organizations who have sponsored past activities have provided prizes for bingo (such as coupon books that can be used at our on site retail store) and refreshments. Groups sponsoring these activities would also volunteer during the activity. Some tasks could include assisting Veterans with their bingo cards, serving refreshments, pushing patients in wheelchairs to the event location, etc. 

We are looking for activity cart volunteers to help us bring joy to our inpatient Veterans during their stay at the Alvin C. York VA in Murfreesboro! The activity cart consists of various items to keep our Veterans minds engaged during their stay with us, examples include adult coloring books, decks of cards, books, current magazines, puzzle books, etc. The ideal candidate is able to walk long distances and has an engaging, pleasant personality. 

We are looking for enthusiastic, customer service oriented individuals to serve as Ambassador volunteers. Our Ambassador volunteers greet Veterans and visitors, assist in answering general information questions and help transport Veterans in wheelchairs as needed. Standing and walking for long periods is required for this assignment. 

This position is available at the Nashville VA Medical Center located at 1310 24th Avenue South in Nashville, as well as the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center at 3400 Lebanon Pike in Murfreesboro.

We are looking for pet therapy volunteers to visit with Veterans and help brighten their day!

The dog and the handler must have certification from a licensed pet therapy organization (such as Music City Pet Partners) .

Documentation that the dog is current on all immunizations must be provided. Pet handler must provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination.

Visitation opportunities are available at both the Nashville VA Medical Center located at 1310 24th Avenue South and the Alvin C. York VA located at 3400 Lebanon Pike in Murfreesboro.

Background check, application, and orientation is required for all new volunteers.

Volunteer drivers are needed to transport Veterans to and from their appointments at the Nashville VA Medical Center. Our volunteer drivers play an important role in ensuring that Veterans who do not have transportation are able to make it to their appointments. Drivers transport Veterans in a government vehicle and must pass a volunteer driver physical.

Volunteers are needed to call Veterans once a week for 15-30 minutes for a friendly telephone visit! Ideal candidates for this position will be patient, have good communication skills, and be excellent listeners.
