This is a great opportunity to meet graduate students from other programs as well as get better connected to the Nashville community! On January 27 we will get together to sort food at Second Harvest Food Bank, a non-profit dedicated to feeding the hungry and solving hunger issues in Middle Tennessee. We will meet at Second Harvest at 1:00 pm.
*All volunteers must complete Second Harvest's Group Member Release Form. If it says you already have an account in the Second Harvest system, you do not need to fill this out again. This will save time and paper by not having to complete a paper release form on-site. Please enter your group name as “Belmont University Service Learning – Stewart.”
At this time, your group is scheduled to work on food sorting. Please note that assignments are subject to change based on our partner agency’s needs and project availability. All groups should be prepared for the possibility of volunteering in the 40 degree cooler sorting through frozen donations.
Please review the instructions below.
About the Volunteer Shift:
It is very important that your group members arrive on time for the shift, and plan to stay for the duration of the shift.
- The first 15-30 minutes will include a welcome and project training.
- Then you will work on the assigned project for around 2 hours. Your group will stop working with around 15-30 minutes left in the shift to help clean up and prepare for the next group.
- Each shift will end with a wrap up, information about how the food bank operates, the impact of your service, and a tour, if requested.
Volunteer Waivers
- All adults except for the group leader must complete the Group Member Form using Belmont University Service Learning – Stewart as the Group Name. This allows us to have a record for each volunteer and also serves as the volunteer waiver for adults. If volunteers have previously completed this form, a new form is not required.
- Minors MUST have a parent or guardian sign the Youth Volunteer Waiver. This can be turned in the day of the volunteer project. In addition, minors may choose to complete the Group Member Form in order to track volunteer hours, or sign up for individual volunteer shifts. The online form is optional for minors, however, the hardcopy Youth Volunteer Waiver is required.
Arrival
- You, or someone you designate as the group leader, will sign in on the kiosk located in the lobby or the Culinary Arts Center using the group ID number 451735. Even though your group members have each received an individual volunteer ID number, they do not need to sign in at the kiosk unless they would like to track their individual volunteer hours.
- Each group member will be asked to take a name badge and sign in on the warehouse visitor log.
- If any of your group members did not complete the online application in advance, let the Volunteer Coordinator know.
Volunteer Duties/Policies and Procedures
Please review the attached policies and procedures prior to your shift, and be sure to also note these important policies.
- All warehouse volunteers must wear close-toed shoes. No exceptions! Volunteers wearing sandals or flip-flops will not be allowed to volunteer. Please ensure that everyone in your group is aware of this policy.
- There are several volunteer projects at Second Harvest that include refrigerated sorting. Please have everyone bring cozy layers in case we ask you to do a “cool” volunteer project!
- No bags, purses or backpacks are allowed in the volunteer area. Please leave these items at home, or in a locked vehicle.
