Backlight Productions

Backlight Productions is a theater arts program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities that provides quality education as well as opportunities for artists with IDD to be featured in large-scale productions which are integrated with professional and youth performers. Backlight began with a small play produced in the upstairs of a thrift store and has become a full arts program with upwards of 70 students a season. Backlight has produced shows for the last 10 years alongside local actors and musicians on some of the most popular stages in Middle TN, giving performers with IDD the opportunity to show the world all that they are capable of and achieve their dreams.

Backlight provides performance opportunities for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in theater, music and dance. It offer weekly classes and regular performances ranging from Broadway musicals, plays, dance competitions, music venues, recording studios, comedy clubs, film and public events. Every Backlight class works towards an experience where artists with IDD can continue to learn and grow throughout their life and be active members of the performing arts community. It also allows for professional and youth artists to use their gifts to put others in the spotlight who are usually lost in the background in the performing arts world.
