Protecting Client Privacy and Confidentiality Webinar
Date and Time: Thursday, June 13, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
Speaker: Mike Klug, SHIP and SMP Centers Consultant
Audience: This webinar is intended for all SMP and SHIP team members who may potentially come in contact with private and/or confidential beneficiary information and/or who have a CMS Unique ID.* MIPPA grantees are also invited if interested.
Description:
While working for the SMP or SHIP, team members may become aware of private information about beneficiaries. This may be health-related, Medicare-related, or information of an otherwise personal nature. Confidentiality related to SMP and SHIP service delivery is a matter of highest importance. Even small breaches may cause harm to beneficiaries or other persons and are subject to serious consequences, up to and including dismissal.
SHIP and SMP representatives are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all proprietary or privileged information to which they are exposed while serving in their role, whether this information involves another team member, a beneficiary, a caregiver, or involves the overall business of the SHIP or SMP.
This webinar will define confidentiality and its implications for SHIP and SMP work, will examine relevant federal laws and program policies that apply to SHIP and SMP operations, and will identify information security best practices.
This webinar is intended to help SMPs and SHIPs meet the Volunteer Risk and Program Management (VRPM) confidentiality policy requirement as well as the *CMS Unique ID program requirement that all SMP and SHIP representatives with CMS Unique IDs receive privacy training.
* CMS Unique IDs are used by active, approved, screened, and trained SHIP and SMP team members with Medicare and participating Medicare plans as a form of verification to provide access to certain beneficiary information when assisting a Medicare beneficiary.
