The Aventura Community School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Summit is a
night program held at Aventura Community School. The goal of this program is to
inspire students to pursue an academic STEM focus in the remainder of their
elementary school years, and to help prepare them for STEM careers in the future. This event
will require about 48 volunteers.
This is a one-night commitment, and no prior prep time is required, but you will
be given guidance on how to facilitate your activity.
Volunteer Activities:
Help with one of the stations below from 6-8pm.
BERNOULLI’S PRINCIPLE (4 volunteers)
This station focuses on using materials, ping pong balls, straws, and cards to demonstrate how air speed, pressure, and drag affect motion.
CARDBOARD ROBOT HAND (2 volunteers)
This kit focuses on students creating a cardboard robot hand by tracing and cutting a hand shape, threading strings through straws to act as tendons, and adjusting string length so pulling the strings bends the fingers. This demonstrates simple mechanics and hand motion.
CENTER of GRAVITY- VSVS (2 volunteers)
Students explore how added mass changes balance and experimenting with balancing objects, such as popsicle stick people and nail structures.
LAVA LAMPS (2 volunteers)
Students learn about states of matter, density, and chemical reactions through hands on experiments with Alka Seltzer reactions and lava lamps to see how gas formation and density differences cause materials to move and separate.
FINGERPRINTING (2 volunteers)
Students learn how fingerprints are formed/classified and used in law enforcement by creating and lifting their own fingerprints while exploring identification techniques.
GLOW IN THE DARK SLIME (4 volunteers)
Students learn about phosphorescence and polymers by exploring how zinc sulfide absorbs and emits light (glow in the dark slime effects).
STEM Launch Challenge (4 volunteers)
Design, build, and race an air-powered rocket! Students will discover how compressed air creates motion and put their engineering skills to the test in an exciting head-to-head rocket race.
EMOCIONES DE COLORES (1 volunteer)
Emotions in Color is a multi-sensory sculpture that combines social emotional learning, neuroscience, and creative play. Asking the question “what shape and color do your emotions feel like?
PH INDICATOR EXPERIMENT MASTER GARDENERS (2 volunteers)
Which vegetables can be used as a natural PH indicator. Students will learn how vegetables, fruits and flowers change color in response to acid and bases
HOVERCRAFT (6 volunteers)
Students will be given a chance to ride aboard one of the 3 hovercrafts that have been built by the Aventura students. Exploring concepts of low air pressure & friction.
LAZER-Large Óptica Technology (4 volunteers)
Students will explore laser technology and large optical systems, learning how light is used in medical and scientific applications through interactive experiments.
Food and water will be provided. Park in the school parking lot.
