Description

Do you like working with children? Do you want to help connect more children with the outdoors? Then Friends of Shelby's Family Day celebration is the perfect volunteer event for you!

What will volunteers be doing at this event?

Volunteers will help Friends of Shelby host educational tents that help children explore science concepts around subjects like water, birds, pollinators, and seeds. You will be there to help them through a guided activity, with a script that you can follow (no experience necessary). You will also help with either setup or tear down of the tents and tables.

What is the community impact of this event?

Our Park Explorer program brings accessible nature education to 4 Title 1 schools in East Nashville, with the hope of closing the "nature gap" that many students experience in Nashville. By hosting this Family Day, we're welcoming these students and their families to the park for a day of relaxation, exploration, and fun together. When you help us host this event, you help us create a welcoming environment for people who might be experiencing the park for the first time.

Accessibility:

This event will be held on a grassy lawn, and you'll be under a shaded tent for most of your shift. We will have water and snacks provided. There is a running water restroom not far away and should be plenty of parking nearby.

What should volunteers bring or wear?

Please wear shoes that are comfortable to stand in and clothing that will keep you cool during the early summer heat. You will be provided a Friends of Shelby t-shirt to wear and keep as a thank you gift. We'd recommend bringing your own water bottle, if possible.

What’s next?

Once you sign up, you'll be sent a pre-event email the week of the event with information on where to park, where to meet, and what to expect. If you have questions, please reach out to cd@friendsofshelby.org. Thank you for your support!
