What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will be helping cleanup around the lake and Vinny Links golf course driving range in the center of Shelby Park. First, we'll remove large sticks and branches from the lake to prevent harmful algae growth. Then, we'll walk over to the Vinny Links driving range and help them retrieve golf balls from the edge of the forest. You will be given all of the tools needed to do these jobs safely.
What is the community impact of this event?
By removing debris from the lake, you'll protect the birds and fish that call it home from harmful algae growth. By cleaning up the driving range, we'll be able to get golf balls back to the Vinny Links clubhouse, where they can use them for their kids programming. Both conservation and recreation are essential to the park's ability to thrive by offering a safe and healthy place to gather.
Accessibility:
Volunteers should be able to walk along uneven ground. You'll need to be able to bend and reach, though certain tools we will provide will make this easier for you. There are port-a-potties located throughout the park and large parking lots that are free to use.
What should volunteers bring or wear?
Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes for their safety. I'd recommend bringing a water bottle and wearing plenty of sun protection, like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. All of the necessary tools and gloves will be provided, as well as extra water and sunscreen.
What’s next?
Once you sign up, you'll receive a pre-event email the week of the event with a parking location, weather, and more information. Questions can be sent to cd@friendsofshelby.org in the meantime. Thank you for your support!
